Alumni Spotlight

“One’s college career is only as good as the time and effort the student puts into it.” I knew that was true before I entered the college scene, but in this time after my graduation, I have realized even more the importance of those college activities outside of the classroom—namely the opportunities I had to reach out to the community and be touched by those around me.

Transferring to UIC was, for me, a great accomplishment. The week before classes commenced, I took notice of the Newman Center. I was raised Catholic and enjoyed the Faith a great deal, but was nervous to see what this campus’ Newman Center had to offer…was it ultra-modern? Or was it full of pious students who had time only for church and books? Were the priests knowledgeable and caring? Was this a place I could form friendships, join clubs, deepen my faith? I decided to find out.

The first Sunday night Mass was wonderful and was followed by a social hour to mix and mingle. This night also provided a chance for students to sign up for groups and activities at the Newman Center. I joined the women’s group and pro-life interest group. My involvement at the Newman Center had begun.

In my time spent at the Newman Center, I served on the Newman Council, distributed food to the homeless, chaired a student pro-life group, participated in weekly Bible study, traveled with other Newman students to the Appalachian foothills, ate countless free meals, made dozens of friendships, and most importantly, deepened my faith in new ways.
In my final semester, I interned for the fundraising office of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. When I got the position I was excited and shared my news with my Newman friends and our Liturgy director; I remember the enthusiasm they showed and the support they gave; people at Newman cared, and it showed.

At my internship, I was asked to describe past accomplishments and activities. At that moment I was so thankful for my time at Newman. I was able to relate all of my community involvement and activities over the past two years, most of which were accomplished through the Newman Center.

I graduated UIC in May, and St. Jude hired me on full-time in July. Due to my involvement at Newman, my resume sparkles, and my experience is thorough as I hope to be an event marketing representative for the hospital’s fundraising branch. Not only will my professional career be enhanced by my Newman experience, but also my personal life; so many of my undergrad memories revolved around the Newman center and those I met there…I will have fun stories to recount and lasting friendships to look forward to.

I thank the Lord for leading me through Newman’s doors.
