Catholicism 101

“My only religious education came from CCD—and that didn’t teach me anything!” Such is the common complaint of many students who come to the Newman Center seeking a deeper level of understanding of what it means to be Catholic. The Newman Center seeks to meet this need through a new program, entitled Theology 101: The Fundamentals of Catholic Faith. Weekly meetings cover topics such as the Sacraments, Catholic social teaching, God’s grace, the meaning of sin, Catholic biblical interpretation, and salvation. Each week students gather together for dinner, listen to a talk on a topic from a campus minister, and discuss the issue as a group. Theology 101 provides students with a chance to learn and discuss important aspects of the Catholic faith in the company of friends with similar questions, thus helping to build the faith community through education and critical thinking.
